After a Chance Meeting, an Ocean-Crossing Collaboration Is Born
New York, NY (Oct 11, 2013) Some Blues artists never stop working – they may take a few days off from the stage but the music, and the desire to always keep playing, never lets them rest.
Kirsten Thien, international touring and recording Blues and Soul songwriter from New York, began a brief winter holiday with family by seeing a top-touring Blues act near Bradenton, Florida. The band was a treat, but Thien was bowled over by their guest guitarist Magnus Berg from Norway, then 16 years old. Berg’s disarmingly shy stance as he approached the stage belied the blazing performance that was to come. His tasty and tasteful playing, first serving the song with rhythm parts and accent licks then breaking out with a no-reservations solo, went straight to the heart and soul of the songwriter in Thien. After a post-show conversation with Berg and his parents, a day-time jam was set up, marking the beginning of a new cross-oceanic, cross-generational collaboration.
In August 2013, Berg and Thien burned up the Festival Stage in Askim, Norway. After their successful European collaboration (which also included a surprise midnight-to-3.am. appearance at a wedding party in an 18th century barn) Thien invited Berg to join her December 2013 Midwest Tour, which includes the venerable Blues stop at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.
“Magnus does more than show promise, he is already an incredible guitar player,” says Thien. “He has studied and absorbed the American Blues tradition so completely and is so committed to his art. I’m learning from him and I’m so excited to add him to the lineup for this tour of some really special venues in the Midwest!”
About Magnus Berg
Magnus Berg was born in Norway, March 19th 1996. He got his first handmade guitar build by his grandfather at the age of seven, but didn’t start to play guitar for real until the age of ten. Early on he discovered the pleasures of listening to and playing old rock ‘n’ roll, and other guitar-based music styles. The first guitar player he admired was Angus Young, the lead guitarist of the Australian hard rock band AC/DC. After a few years Magnus discovered the roots of the music he was listening to, and he found the blues. His grandfather introduced him to artists such as B.B King, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Otis Rush and Jimmy Reed. These musicians are the biggest inspiration for his guitarplaying, singing and songwriting.
Made his first appearance on stage at the age of twelve, playing rock ‘n’ roll. As he has grown and learned, he has developed a unique style and tone on the guitar. For the moment Magnus is working with several projects and bands. His first record was recorded in the beginning of December 2012, and was released in the beginning of February 2013. He is currently working on writing songs for his next record, touring with the Norwegian pop artist Trine Rein and playing concerts with his own band, Magnus Berg Bluesband
